Do I need Medical Nutrition Therapy?

Our diet, or what we eat and drink, is one of the major determinants of health. Food provides fuel for our bodies and minds. It’s crucial that diet provides the appropriate nutrition our bodies need to function and thrive. Food is also a source of enjoyments and a way to connect socially. Unfortunately, the Standard American Diet, with an appropriate acronym SAD, is a way of eating for many Americans. If you are diagnosed with any of the so-called lifestyle diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes/prediabetes, hypertension, as well as any other chronic disease, nutrition and lifestyle modifications are often recommended as first-line therapies. In fact, lifestyle changes, which include better nutrition, have been shown in a number of clinical trials to be a better treatment than medications for a variety of chronic conditions.

Our diet impacts how we function, how we look, how we think, how we move, and how we sleep. An integrative dietitian works with individuals to ensure that not only is their diet appropriate for their nutritional and physiological needs, but their digestive process is healthy, and the whole body is at its optimal functioning.

What is Integrative Medical Nutrition Therapy?

Medical Nutrition Therapy, or MNT, is an evidence-based medical approach to treating chronic conditions through an individually tailored nutrition and supplement plan. It begins with an assessment from a Registered Dietitian, and then a tailored nutritional plan is prescribed. An integrative dietitian approaches treatment by first identifying the root causes of disease through a careful review of symptoms and functional lab testing, and then treating the imbalances with a combination of modalities, such as personalized diet and supplement plan, optimization of digestion, stress management, and exercise recommendations.

What can I expect from my first visit?

Your first visit will include a careful review of completed medical forms, food intake diaries/questionnaires, health concerns and symptoms, medical history, dietary supplement use, a physical assessment, and lots of (you) talking and (me) listening to what your desired outcomes are. Before your appointment, I will review all the documentation you submit ahead of your scheduled date, so that we can use our time together in the most efficient way. My number one goal for the first appointment is to learn as much as possible about you, so that I can empower you to take charge of your health.

We will work together to create a personalized treatment plan that will address the whole person (diet, supplements, sleep, exercise, stress) and follow-up appointments will track your progress from a medical, physical, and emotional perspective to ensure that the individually-tailored plan is working properly and adjusting it as needed.

Do you coordinate with other healthcare providers I am seeing?

Yes! In order to provide my clients with the most comprehensive care possible, I communicate directly with other practitioners.
